Following a L32 at the Cole Cup, Irish #7 Michael Jacob made his second outing on the FIE circuit at the Men’s Sabre satellite in Reykjavik.

The Viking Cup has traditionally been fertile ground for Irish fencers: two years ago, Stephen Concannon’s Olympic campaign started with a L8 here.

Jacob continued that strong tradition, coming through the pools V9D2 and qualifying easily for the tableau as 4th seed. He knocked out Ghosh GBR 15-5 in the L16, but lost to world #93 Ayala MEX in the quarter-final. Ayala went on to reach the final. Jacob placed 6th overall, earning a World Cup point in his first international season.
