Three Irish youth fencers competed at the Junior World Championships today, fencing in Women’s Foil and Men’s Épée.
Épéeist Geoffrey Corcoran finished 98th at the Junior World Championships today, in his final season on the international junior circuit. The pool round started at 8.20 Uzbek time and brought victories over Benreguia ALG and Al Karbi UAE, as well as close matches against Wong HKG and Mohsen EGY. Finishing V2D4, Corcoran qualified comfortably for the DE tableau. In the L128 he was defeated 15-12 by Son KOR, placing 98th of 153 fencers.
Victoria Duxbury and Anna Lee fenced in Women’s Foil, concluding Ireland’s involvement in this year’s tournament.
Victoria Duxbury, in her final season in Juniors, claimed victories over Nehaisi ISR, Joergensen DEN plus a 5-4 loss to Ondarts ARG. She qualified for the DE round V2D4, facing Tinio PHI in the L128. A comfortable victory took Victoria into the L64, where she met world #11 Miyawaki JPN. Victoria was knocked out 15-10, placing 59th overall.
Cadet Anna Lee was V3D3 in the pool, defeating Moor GER, Moreno Valiente CUB and Barratt AUS and earning a bye through to the L64. Her opponent, Fu CHN, progressed 15-10 with Anna finishing 46th of 88 fencers.
