Well done to all of the Northern Ireland fencers who competed at the British Youth Championships in Sheffield over the bank holiday weekend!

FOIL

Under-14 Men’s

Of the 78 entrants, Jonathan Connery was the highest-placed Northern Ireland fencer. Following a bye into the L64, Jonathan was knocked out 15-9 by Barbour (Scotland Central) and placed 40th.

Finn McMullan and Matthew McKay also earned byes into the L64. Finn was defeated 15-13 by Howarth (Wales), while Matthew lost 15-12 to eventual bronze medallist Ashforth (Eastern). Finn and Matthew placed 47th and 48th respectively.

Noah Brown progressed to the L64 over Koyupinar (Guernsey) with a 15-3 victory, but was denied a place in the L32 by Strange (London) and finished 52nd. Rowan Luney knocked out Scott (North East) 15-6, but came 62nd after a 15-9 loss to Daniel (Eastern).

Under-14 Women’s

Sarah Shaw overturned Hudson (West Midlands) 15-14 only to meet the second seed Raiyat (West Midlands) in the L32. She placed 29th of 53 entries. Katie-Rose Williams knocked out Gibb (South East) 15-11 but placed 30th after a loss to Emily Beardmore (Southern).

Under-16 Men’s

Reaching the L16 in a field of 64 foilists, Daniel Sigurdsson defeated Johnson (North West) 15-13 and overturned 6th seed Wilson (Southern) 15-6, before losing to Ashby (London) in the L16 to place 16th overall.

Robbie Cockburn placed 25th. He defeated Cronin (North West) 15-10, but was knocked out by Deering (South East). William Girvin eliminated Roberts (Scotland Central) 15-14 before going out against Gill (London) and finishing in 26th place. Luke Wallace also made it to the L32. Having knocked out Wallendahl (London) 15-5, he fell short against Suha (North West), going out 15-12.

Guennou (London) kept Michael Thompson from a top-half finish, knocking him out in the L64 to place 44th.

Under-16 Women’s

With two NI fencers among the 48 entered for U16 Women’s Foil, Charlotte Slater eliminated Canty (Wales) 15-7 and knocked out Smyth (Eastern) 15-8 for a place in the L16. She was defeated by top seed Brown (North East) and placed 15th. Clubmate Ciara Cormican was knocked out by Cheema-Grubb (South East) 15-8 and placed 38th.

EPEE

Under-14 Women’s

Sarah Shaw defeated Edwards (Wales) 15-10 but went out to 5th seed Kryzyzaniak (London) 15-9, placing 27th of 52. Zoe Peden lost 15-5 to Fielding (Scotland Central) and finished 42nd.

Under-16 Men’s

William Girvin knocked out Goss (Guernsey) 15-5, Carey (East Midlands) 15-9 and third seed Wake (Yorkshire) 11-9. In the quarter-finals, William lost 15-10 to Shepherd (Yorkshire) who went on to reach the final. William came 7th of 54 fencers. Michael Thompson seeded 5th after the pools, receiving a bye into the L32. He knocked out Brown (Scotland Central) and went on to place 11th after a 15-9 loss to Papadopoulos (Scotland Central).

Under-16 Women’s

Competing in épée as well as foil, Charlotte Slater reached the L32 with 15-8 victory over Foniciello (Scotland East). She was knocked out 15-11 by top seed Palano (London), finishing 29th of 55 competitors.

Three other NI fencers went out in the L64. Zoe Stanley was knocked out 15-13 by Mitchell (East Midlands) and came 40th. Emily Johnson lost 15-6 to Counter (North East) and finished 50th. Sabreuse Beth Taylor placed 53rd after losing 15-11 to Curwen (South West) – the same Curwen whom Beth eliminated in the L32 of the sabre.

SABRE

Under-16 Womens

Beth Taylor received a bye into the L32 to beat Curwen (South West) 15-8. In the L16 Beth lost 15-12 to third seed Yang (London), finishing in 14th place out of 39 fencers. Ciara Cormican knocked out Shakespeare (West Midlands) 15-13, but lost to Ware (Wales) 15-11 and came 29th.
