It is with great regret and sadness that we have learnt of the passing of Lawrence Gough. Lawrence was a past captain of UCD Fencing Club. Lawrence also held the title of Irish Schoolboy Champion in his youth. Most recently, Lawrence represented Ireland at the World Veteran Championships.

Lawrence served as a Committee Member of the Irish Fencing Federation for two years ending in July 2015. During this time he took the great trouble and personal expense of traveling from Germany to our meetings in Dublin. When he couldn’t travel, he joined the meetings through Skype. His contributions were highly valued and always constructive. He brought wisdom to discussions – a wisdom that came of his many years fencing in Germany and as an international fencer. Lawrence played a major role in providing world-class épée camps and sabre in Ireland thanks to his contacts in the German Fencing Federation, as well as his personal donations towards their cost.

Lawrence was a well-loved and recognised international fencer, particularly on the veteran circuit, and was greatly respected amongst fencers in Ireland, Germany, and elsewhere.

History will record that in his early years fencing in Ireland, there were divisions between Lawrence and the then-Irish Amateur Fencing Federation. Notwithstanding what occurred 40 years ago and the obvious hurt caused to Lawrence, he showed no ill-will and indeed made every effort to support both Ireland, the Federation and individual Irish fencers. His charm, wit and very considerable contribution will be greatly missed, as will his presence on pistes in Germany and at the many veterans events including the World Veterans’ Fencing Championships.
