Despite fielding teams in senior foil and épée, Verona was the first outing for any Ireland U20 team. As such, our foilists entered the competition unseeded and faced tough draws.

The Women's Foil team was up first, facing a formidable Italian squad all individually ranked inside the world top 10. The underdog Ireland team came won two bouts of the nine, but were ultimately knocked out 45-29.

The potential in the Irish side is demonstrated by a quick glance at the L32 tableau, which saw nations seeded above Ireland knocked out by 40-point margins. Italy went on to lose to the USA in the semi-finals, with USA taking gold over Singapore 45-30.

Competing in a larger field of 38, Ireland was one of four unseeded Men's Foil teams and faced a L64 draw against Serbia. Anchored by junior #47 Veljko Cuk, team Serbia eked out a lead in the opening bouts until a 10-4 performance by Eoin Gronningsater put Ireland level, and our junior foilists were just one point adrift at the opening of the final bout. Ireland went out on a frustrating 45-43 scoreline.
