This week, Ireland sent five elite fencers to Moscow to compete in the 2015 World Championships. All five were also invited to an international sparring camp hosted by the FIE in the run-up to the tournament.

Monday 13 July – MEN’S SABRE

Stephen Concannon, Aidan Clarke and Michalis Kirimlidis were among 148 sabreurs contesting the opening event of this year’s World Championships.

Stephen Concannon defeated Massamba Malanda CGO and Beugre CIV in the pool, qualifying for the DEs and facing Yilidrim TUR. Despite a strong second-half fightback, Stephen was knocked out to place 106th.

Aidan Clarke had a victory over Affortu GHA and a close bout against Escudero ESP, but did not progress beyond the pools. He finished 122nd.

Despite a number of strong performances in the pool, Michalis Kirimlidis placed 134th with no victories.

Wednesday 15 July – MEN’S FOIL

Both David Alexander and Brendan Cusack got off to a promising start in the Men’s Foil event. Alexander defeating Pham VIE, Mohammed KUW and Aguirre VEN to seed 72nd, while Cusack seeded 80th following pool victories over Leon VEN, Chen SIN and Teliporandis GRE. With 156 fencers competing, both qualified comfortably for the DEs.

In the preliminary 128, Cusack suffered a 15-14 upset to Alvear CHI and was knocked out. He finishes in 98th place.

David Alexander received a bye through to the preliminary 64 but lost to Li CHN, placing 78th overall.

Very well done to all of our fencers, who have performed fantastically throughout the tournament. We wish them the very best of luck in the coming season.
