The second foil Grand Prix of the 2015/16 season took place this weekend, with three Irish fencers travelling to Cuba to compete. As the final world event before selection to the Olympic qualifier, Havana offered a final chance to earn a decisive World Cup point.

With victories over Aguirre VEN and Matyas HUN, Brendan Cusack (Empire United) qualified for the DEs with a bye through the preliminary 128. Cusack’s first elimination match was against world #26 Cheung Ka Long of Hong Kong. Cheung progressed 15-9. Cusack placed 89th of 131 fencers.

David Alexander (Nottingham Cavaliers) defeated Ayad EGY and Heroui ALG in the pools, also advancing to the tableau. He drew Samandi TUN, currently ranked 33rd in the world, in the first round and was knocked out 15-10. He finished 103rd.

Despite a pool victory over More Chavez CUB, Anna Smith (DUFC / Capital City) did not qualify for the tableau and she placed 107th of 116.
