Ireland entered two individual fencers and a Women’s Foil team for the World Cup event in Paris this weekend.
Fresh from junior success in Bochum, Anna Lee (Pembroke FC) earned a place in the tableau with victories over Ueltgesforth GER and Havrankova. Victoria Duxbury (Edinburgh FC) also came through the pool with two victories, besting Castanie FRA and Jang KOR. Unfortunately, indicators left Victoria just a few places short of the cut to 126, and Anna Lee went out 15-11 to Laffey USA in the first round.
Anna Lee: 130th of 191
Victoria Duxbury: 151st of 191
The unseeded Ireland team drew Sweden for the L32 of the Team World Cup event. The highlight came in the 7th bout as Keziah Beattie (Grosvenor FC) carried out a 12-2 dismantling of Cristina Valero-Collantes to put Ireland ahead. Victoria Duxbury defended the lead into the final period, with Anna Lee facing Sweden’s Ester Schreiber in a 44-44 showdown.

The podiums indicated an interesting international landscape as the pressure mounts for Tokyo 2020. Hong Hyo-Jin KOR took the individual championship, with her compatriot Chae Song-Oh claiming bronze. Alice Volpi of Italy continued her run of form, edging out Russia’s Svetlana Tripapina 15-14 to reach the final against Hong.
Tripapina missed the opportunity for a rematch against the world #4 on Sunday, finding herself substituted out of Team Russia in the team World Cup final against Italy. While Team Italy looked untroubled all day, including claiming and maintaining a lead throughout the final, Russia’s victories over Hungary and USA were perhaps a little too close for comfort. China defeated the USA 45-42 for bronze.
