The European Championships kicked off today in Torun, Poland. Men’s Foil was the first event of the tournament, with Ireland’s best result coming from Brendan Cusack.

Brendan Cusack defeated Babaoglu TUR, Dosa HUN and Andersen DEN in the pool and advanced to the tableau as 28th seed. He knocked out Lecocq BEL with a fantastic 15-3 victory in the L64, leading to a match-up against Olympic silver medallist Martino Minuto TUR (formerly ITA) for the L16. Cusack was knocked out 15-9 and came 26th of 66 fencers.

With a victory over Navas BEL and belle touche losses to Safin RUS and Tsevan BLR, David Alexander placed 58th in the individual event. Pool opponent Cassara ITA reached the L8 while Safin went on to claim the European title. 

Conor Nagle also had a difficult morning, finishing 63rd after after a pool that also yielded two quarter-finalists.

Team Ireland’s foilists will be back on piste on Thursday to contest the team European Championship.
