Fencing Ireland has three levels of certification for aspiring Armourers, described below.

Structure

Level 1 – Personal Armourer

  • Theory
    – how the weapons work and interact with the scoring system
    – basic armoury kit
    – relevant rules: interpretation and understanding
  • Practical
    – basic troubleshooting: how to trace where the problem is
    – identifying the fault
    – repairing the fault
    – correct set-up of the weapon: application of the rules and common mistakes
  • Exam

Level 2 – Club Armourer

  • Theory
    – how the scoring system works
    – how different elements of the scoring system interact
  • Practical
    – basic troubleshooting: how to trace where the problem is
    – identifying the fault
    – repairing the fault
    – correct set-up of the piste and scoring system: application of the rules and common mistakes
  • Exam

Level 3 – Competition Armourer

  • Theory
    – differences between domestic and international standards
    – identification of standards
    – responsibilities for Health & Safety: the armourer’s role
    – purpose of Weapon Control at international events
  • Practical
    – completing an equipment check: how to complete
    – completing an equipment check: how to identify faults and failings
  • Exam
