The 18th Flemish Open took place this weekend in Ghent, Belgium, incorporating an FIE satellite in Men’s Sabre. 64 fencers entered this year, including three Irishmen – all Salle Dublin sabreurs.

Aidan Clarke defeated Vereecke BEL and Adema NED in the pools, qualifying for the DEs. He was knocked out by Breyne BEL and placed 46th.

Clubmate Michalis Kirimlidis took victories over Toch BEL, Almutairi KSA, Matushkin RUS, Ceccopieri ITA, Polak NED and De Donder BEL across two pools. Irish #1 Stephen Concannon also had six victories in the pools, over Vasquez CHI, Notzon SUI, Cormio ITA, Reimer AUT, Toch BEL and Dolezal CZE.

Unfortunately, Concannon and Kirimlidis were drawn as opponents in the L64, with Concannon progressing and Kirimlidis finishing 35th. In the L32, Concannon faced British number one and eventual bronze medallist Alexander Crutchett, losing 15-12. He placed 30th overall.
