The 2018 Challenge Wratislavia took place from 22-26 March, inviting U15, U13 and U11 fencers at all six weapons to the Polish city of Wrocław for one of the biggest underage events in the world. Entry is open to all fencers prepared to make the trip, and this year saw a six-fencer delegation from Pembroke FC taking part.

U15 Boys’ Foil

Claudio Sosa Smatrala beat Harms GER, Pander POL and Man NED in the pools, advancing to the DE as 104th seed. Defeating Lymarenko UKR 15-7 in the first round, he drew the 24th seed Briggs GBR – but overturned the higher seed 15-8 to reach the last 64. Here, Claudio’s luck ran out as he was knocked out by Tymon Lewicki POL.

Despite defeating Rochet FRA, Matteo Sanvito finished the pool with five defeats and was cut before the DE tableau.

U13 Boys’ Foil

Victories over Skorupa POL, Alfven SWE and Gmurek POL saw Luke Sherlock into the DEs with an initial draw against Botló SVK. Luke progressed to the L64 with a comprehensive win 12-3, but his run was ended at the hands of Gafe LAT.

U11 Boys’ Foil

Concluding his pool with victories over Jakubowski POL, Firlej POL and Ciepłota POL, Leon Loftus-Gautier earned a place in the tableau with a bye through the L256. Leon held the far higher-seeded Koráb CZE to 7-7 before conceding the last point, and with it a place in the L64.

U11 Girls’ Foil

Erika Sanvito earned a victory against against Ormane LAT, but did not go through to the DEs in U11 Girls Foil.
