Anna Lee (Pembroke Fencing Club), Phillip Cripwell (DUFC), and Jonathan Burnside (Foyle Fencing) took part in the ‘Mémorial de Martinengo’ Junior World Cup at Bratislava, Slovakia. The IFF’s flagship event, the Irish Open, takes place this Saturday/Sunday 28/29 November. Entry to foil, sabre, and Women’s Épée is still open on our Irish Open microsite. Entry to the Men’s Épée FIE satellite has now closed; a full list of entrants is available on the FIE website.
The 2015 Five Nations tournament took place in Ulster University, hosted by NI Fencing. England topped the table in all six weapons once again, but were denied a clean sweep by the NI Women’s Sabre team in a 45-43 upset. Well done to Anna Smith, who has placed 28th of 47 at the Ankara FIE satellite in Women’s Foil. She defeated Diller TUR and Tor TUR in the pool, qualifying for the tableau. Smith eliminated Flodesa INA 15-11 to reach the L32, where she was knocked out by Ryan CAN.
Irish fencers competed across all three weapons at this year’s Welsh Open in Cardiff. The result of the weekend came from junior Anna Lee (Pembroke). Well done to Jenny McGeever (Pentathlon Ireland) who has placed 33rd at the Trekanten Open FIE satellite in Copenhagen. She was knocked out 15-10 by Dunlap-Smith USA. A mention also to DUFC fencer and Irish #1 Camille Hindsgaul, competing for Denmark. Camille did not qualify for the second round and placed 44th overall.
The 24th edition of the SISTA-MMIT International took place in Amsterdam on Sunday. This event is ranked as an FIE Satellite. After two rounds of pools, Aidan Clarke was V5D6 and seeded 33rd for the tableau, having defeated Terleth NED (twice), Roman FIN, Draeger GER and Secosan ROU. On Saturday 7 November, eleven 6-member teams fenced off for the Trinity Cup. Two teams entered the final round tied on nine victories each, fencing the decisive bout at the close of the day. ‘DUFC1’ emerged the victors 30-23, with ‘Trinity Won’ taking silver. Anna Smith defeated Rodriguez-Menendez ESP in the first wave of pools to finish V1D5. Victoria Duxbury fared better in the second wave, with victories over Schmitz GER and Gu CAN. Unfortunately, both missed the cut for the tableau, with Duxbury falling short by just a few places. Anna places 160th while Victoria finished 138th.
