The 18th Flemish Open took place this weekend in Ghent, Belgium, incorporating an FIE satellite in Men’s Sabre. 64 fencers entered this year, including three Irishmen – all Salle Dublin sabreurs. Back in Finland, there were four entries to Sunday’s Junior World Cup in Men’s Épée, competing in a field of 174 fencers. Arran Hope and Oliver Hope (King’s School Canterbury) took one victory each in the pool, over Hagberg SWE and Raeder NOR respectively. Unfortunately neither qualified for the tableau. Kerrie Johnson (Plymouth) travelled to Laupheim, Germany for the Uhlmann Cup, her first appearance on the Junior World Cup circuit. A victory over Stanier GBR was not enough to take her through to the tableau, and she placed 120th overall.

The very best of luck this weekend to Brendan Cusack, who continues his bid for a place at the Rio Olympics at the Men’s Foil World Cup in San José, California. Pools start on Friday 16 October at 10am local time (6pm Irish time). US Fencing will be publishing live results throughout the event.
Phillip Cripwell (DUFC) competed in the Men’s Foil Junior World Cup in Leszno, Poland on 10 October. With a pool victory over Luceba LAT, he placed 133rd of 161 competitors. Full results are available from the FIE website.

The first senior sabre World Cup of the new season was held in Tbilisi, Georgia over 9-10 October. World #232 Stephen Concannon was selected for Ireland.
